Training as a chartered accountant:

  • The title ‘chartered accountant’ can only be used by those who have completed ICAEW’s ACA qualification.
  • To qualify, students must undertake a minimum of three years on-the-job training and pass a series of examinations.
  • The ACA qualification is made up of four key elements:
    • 450 days of practical work experience – showing what a career in chartered accountancy looks like.
    • 15 exam modules covering a broad range of topics including: financial management, law and business strategy.
    • Professional development – preparing you to successfully handle different situations that you’ll encounter throughout your career.
    • Ethics and professional scepticism – providing you with the skills to make the right decision under pressure.
  • As part of your training, you will undertake classes with an expert tutor either face-to-face or online.
  • There are a number of routes to becoming an ICAEW Chartered Accountant, including apprenticeships, training agreements, graduate schemes and more.
